great laptop!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this laptop about six months ago and haven’t had a single problem with it. The widescreen is great and I love that this computer has a full keyboard with 10 key and all. It is very frustrating trying to do any work with numbers on a normal laptop due to the lack of a “full size” keyboard. As other reviewers have stated the glossy finish does pick up fingerprints, but I don’t find that too bothersome.
Pros:
nice clear screen
built in webcam and mic
great keyboard
works well
Cons:
6.6 pounds… not a lightweight
battery life is fairly short. (around 2 hours)
All in all great computer, would recommend! 5 out of 5 stars.

Don’t buy HP
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have had nothing but problems getting service for my HP. I get different answers from different people who can’t understand me.
If you run into a problem, they stink at trying to help. The extra money for a different company is sure to be worth the sloppy job they do on their computers. A mother board they replaced has a problem six months later and they want me to pay them to diagnose the problem that I already have identified. They want me to buy a new motherboard because its “out of warranty.” ?? Too much money to not stand by your product.

Disappointed
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I was very disappointed in my Pavilion because this was the first HP product that has given me trouble. It arrived in good condition because it was well packed. In a short time I had it up and running. At this point a five star rating. However, the next day when I tried to boot it up, nothing happened. After HP tech support (somewhere in deepest India) couldn’t solve the problem, he started giving me instructions on how to send it in for repairs. I told the tech that I didn’t buy a reconditioned computer. I wanted a new one. He said no company would exchange this dud for a new computer. Since I knew better, I just humored this fellow (whom I could hardly understand) and listened to him explain when the container in which the computer would be sent back would arrive. I called Amazon.com, explained the situation, and received credit for the purchase before the box from HP arrived. The one star rating is for this particular computer. This one just happened to be a dud. I rate HP products very high generally. I also give Amazon.com a five star rating the way they handeled this transaction. By the way, I would give the HP tech a zero rating for his mastery of speaking the English language.

Avoid HP, worst service/warranty support there is
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I had a similar problem with one of the other reviewers here. HP would not service my laptop due to “customer related damage” which it was obviously not. There is a reason they are dead last in all customer service polls. God forbid if you need actually service. Between dealing with people in India, which most barely speak English, and zero warranty support, take your money elsewhere. HP is the worst service experience I have ever had.

Crossing my fingers
anyhoo other that that I like the computer…if it would only work.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this HP laptop late June ‘09. I used it for 5 weeks until one afternoon it completely crashed. After 5 hours with tech support and after rebooting the computer it died, dead as a doornail. It will NOT even power on. The computer is a paperweight for all I care. It’s under warranty and will be going in for an autopsy. I guess I got another lemon…please be wary. On the bright side, HP tech support was courteous and efficient and were easy to understand (no accents

The price is too high. Could be system problem
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I am just writing this review because the price is shown as $99,999. This seems to a system problem.
The laptop needs to be made from pure gold for this price.

Works good for games and videos
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve owned mine for approx. six months now with no problems at all. After having some problems with vista on my desktop I wasn’t thrilled to have it on my laptop but it works good without any problems. We use it mainly for surfing the internet and playing videos and games, and I have to say that it works much better for this than my Dell desktop.

8″ of Dead Pixels & counting
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I bought this computer in April 2009 from Staples. It worked fine until about a month ago. I turned it on & there were a few dead (black) pixels across the bottom. Every time I turn it on there are more dead pixels — now the longest stretch of dead ones is over 8″ long with 4-6 more rows of dead pixels that are 4″ long.
I spent a long time chatting with “customer service” (there’s an oxymoron….). They want me to ship it back to them for “service”. I said, “No — I did not pay for a refurbished computer. I bought a NEW computer.” After reading these dismal reviews on Amazon (for which I am very grateful) I realize that working with HP is a hopeless venture.
They have told me that it has been escalated to a manger who will call me back within 48 hours. I’ve read time & again online that others have been given that song & dance & have never been called.
We had also just bought two other HP’s over the summer along three HP printers. If they don’t make it right, i.e., replace this with a brand new computer (since that’s what I paid for!) I will never, ever buy another HP product & I will make certain that everyone I know hears of my experience with HP “quality”.
It just seems to me that once a company outsources, their customer service goes down the toilet. We are dealing with persons who are reading off of a script & who cannot “think”. Very frustrating for the consumer!

Happy….but…
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The laptop is great, but my charger must have busted because my laptop will not turn on. a light flashes indicating that there is still juice coming from the battery but it needs charging. SO, I have to get a new charge box to charge my laptop once again and use it.

Slow, Sticky and Frozen
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This thing is crap. Looks great out of the box, the wireless internet, ANY wireless internet takes fives to come up. You cannot even click on wireless connections during that time or the thing freezes. Constantly freezing on webpages. Very slow. No thanks. Try something else and do yourself a favor….

A solid budget desktop replacement
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Like most people, I never use a laptop in an airplane or on my lap. I don’t mind carrying a few extra pounds when I do take it somewhere nearly as much as I object to teeny tiny keyboards, and having to deal with a mass of extra peripherals if I happen to want to burn a DVD.
The nicest thing about this laptop, by far, is the keyboard. It seems to be solidly built, has exactly the right resistance, and the number pad isn’t too shabby. If you happen to be a windows user (I use Ubuntu Hardy Heron, more on that later) the ability to disable the touchpad with the button right above it is a joy. This may seem trivial, but after over a decade as a computer tech I’ve come to appreciate a well designed keyboard. It’s a rare gift in a laptop.
Physically, the laptop seems solidly constructed.I wish it had a latch, but that’s purely irrational. This laptop doesn’t NEED a latch because the screen hinge has a fair amount of resistance to it. Fingerprints and stains do show on the case, but laptops that travel much end up looking pretty ratty within a year anyway.
The screen is bright and crisp, although the graphics card is weak. It doesn’t have any memory of its own, and has to borrow from the operating system. One review I saw somewhere claimed that NWN2 worked on this computer. It does, but only just, and with a fair amount of crashing and stalling. Likewise, if you want to use this computer for graphically intense applications (I tried blender3D) it can be a bit frustrating. Most normal applications (word processing, [...], mp3 players, email, firefox, spreadsheet, netbeans, etc…) run just fine on this system.
A special note to anyone intending to use this computer for Ubuntu or some other flavor of linux. The wireless network card is not well supported. I DID get it to work in Ubuntu, but it required upgrading the kernel. It took me a few weeks to get that problem hashed out. Likewise, the video card is not well supported in Ubuntu, but it does well enough for my needs. The video and wireless network card should be fixed with the next release. The buttons that disable the touchpad and wireless don’t work, and probably never will without a lot of extra effort on your part.
If I were still using windows I’d be very angry about having Vista rammed down my throat. Vista is a performance hog with few features that a normal user would want or need. My greatest wish for this system is that HP provide an easy way to ‘downgrade’ to Windows XP. I’d even want to put windows 2000 pro on it except that the few games I’d like to play on it no longer support that OS.

Great Value Great Computer
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My parents bought this (G60-230us) for me in Feb 2009 when I decided to go back to school. So far the only problem I had was with the battery. When plugged in one day the power light kept blinking and it said my battery was not charging. I called HP and was sent a new battery free of charge. Then when I received the new battery it did it again, HP told me to take the battery out and hold the power button for 45 seconds. This seemed to work until a few days later it started acting up again. I have noticed that it only does this if the laptop gets too hot, so this is probably my fault bc Im always sitting in bed with it and my comforter blocks the fan. After unblocking the fan it works and charges just fine…so maybe this is some kind of safety measure? Anyways, one feature that I would like for this laptop to have is a backlit keyboard and a better placement of the powersource cord (it sticks out on the side and gets caught on stuff). Other than that this computer has yet to do me wrong. When you get it just make sure to clean out the bloatware bc this baby is loaded with it! If you have pets that like to jump in your lap while on the computer be wary bc my five month old pug jumped on my lap and when she slid off she popped off the right arrow key and broke the plastic retainer (its been hell finding a replacement). The finish of this laptop is beautiful but it is easily dirtied by fingerprints and dust, as well as the screen. I have yet to burn dvds or cds on here but Im sure it wont be a problem. I dont see why everyone hates Vista b/c I have used every new version since Windows 95 and I adapted to this like a fish in water…just be careful not to accidentally delete the trashcan bc once you do and you get it back it somehow loses its “brain” and the icon is forever empty or full lol. I pretty much use this laptop for word documents, research, and screwing around on the internet so I am satisfied with this laptop and I hope it lasts a long time.
